Choosing a scooter tire: reading the tire size

Michelin City Grip 2 scooter tire

Your tires are your only contact with the road, so a good tire in the right size is pure safety. Fortunately, everything you need is right on the tire itself — you just have to read it.

This is how you read the tire size

There is a code on the side as 120/70-12:

  • 120 — the width of the tire in millimeters.
  • 70 — the height, as a percentage of the width.
  • 12 — the rim diameter in inches.

Copy that code exactly from your old tape. Please note: the front and rear tires may differ in size, so read them both.

Tubeless (TL) or with inner tube (TT)?

It says on the tape TL (tubeless, without inner tube) or TT (tube type, with inner tube). Stick to what goes with your rim and tire. If you continue driving in the winter, look for a tire with M + Smarking (all-season profile).

When is your tire due for replacement?

Replace the tire if there is too little pressure. profile (legally a minimum of 1 mm, but sooner is wiser), at cracks or hardening, or if the tire is simply old. Does a tire wear out irregular, then check the tire pressure and the suspension.
