Piaggio MP3 Maintenance Schedule

Piaggio MP3

The Piaggio MP3 is a three-wheeler, and this is reflected in the maintenance: in addition to normal scooter work, it has a tilting front suspension with its own lubrication points. The engine rhythm, however, is very straightforward — Piaggio hangs virtually everything on the 10.000 km service: engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, V-belt, and the CVT rollers come out all at once.

Pay attention to the spark plugs: the 500 ie (493 cc) has a double spark plug ignition system — so you have it two needed, not one. Below is the complete schedule with the factory specifications.

For which version does this schedule apply?

  • MP3 500 ie Sport/Business/LT (493 cc, 2007-2018) — complete maintenance table + fluid specs confirmed via the official Piaggio Service Station Manual
  • MP3 300 hpe / 300 hpe Sport (278 cc, Euro 4/5, 2019+) — mileage schedule confirmed via the official Piaggio overview (wlassets.piaggio.com); same maintenance schedule as the 493cc generation
  • MP3 500 hpe Sport Advanced (Euro 5) — mileage chart confirmed via the official Piaggio overview (wlassets.piaggio.com)
  • MP3 400 hpe — same platform family as the 300 hpe; rhythm assumed to be the same but NOT confirmed with its own official table (see gaps)

Note: MP3 125 (incl. ie Hybrid, 2006-2018): smaller 124cc engine, since disappeared from the current Piaggio range — no first-party wlassets.piaggio.com overview found (attempt at the expected URL returned HTTP 404). Loose third-party fragments (ManualsLib indexing) mention oil change at 1.000 km and then every 6.000 km, belt/rollers every 20.000 km — this has NOT been independently confirmed via a first-party Piaggio source and therefore kept outside the scope of this file (see gaps) instead of averaged with the 300/500 figures. MP3 250 ie (2006-2013): intermediate displacement, presumably comparable to the 300/500 line but not separately verified.

Specifications in brief

PartFactory specification
Engine oilSAE 5W-40, API SL, ACEA A3, JASO MA (manufacturer's recommendation: AGIP CITY HI TEC 4T, synthetic) — confirmed for the 493cc IE engine (MP3 500, 2011). HPE engine (300/400/500 hpe) not separately confirmed with its own lubricant table, same specification class assumed. — 1,7 L (493cc engine; HPE quantity not separately confirmed, see gaps)
Hub oil / transmission oilSAE 80W-90, exceeds API GL3 (manufacturer's recommendation: AGIP ROTRA 80W-90) — 'rear hub oil', not to be confused with motor oil — 250 cc
CoolantMonoethylene glycol antifreeze, CUNA NC 956-16 (manufacturer's recommendation: AGIP PERMANENT SPEZIAL) — approx. 1,8 L (493cc engine)
Spark plugNGK CR7EKB (2x per engine — dual-spark plug ignition system); electrode gap 0,7-0,8 mm. No alternative spark plug type listed in the source table.
Valve clearanceintake 0,15 mm / exhaust 0,15 mm (cold) — confirmed for the 493cc IE engine. HPE engine (SOHC 4-valve with roller tappets) not separately confirmed — see gaps.
Brake fluidDOT 4 synthetic (manufacturer's recommendation: AGIP BRAKE 4)
Air filterfoam/paper element; alternate cleaning/checking every 10.000 km
Drive belt (V-belt)V-belt + CVT rollers/sliding shoes: replace both every 10.000 km — confirmed in both the full 493cc table (2011) and the official HPE km overview (300 hpe and 500 hpe Sport Advanced), strong mutual cross-validation.

Wear parts outside the fixed schedule

  • Replace brake pads — at wear limit (insufficient brake lining/wear indicator)
  • Front suspension (parallelogram) — extra lubrication of side housing bearings via grease nipple tool P/N 020943Y (4 lubrication points: top + bottom on both side housings) — NO fixed Piaggio kilometer/month interval — Technical Bulletin 012-2012 (24-04-2012, valid for MP3 all versions + Fuoco 500) explicitly mentions this as additional lubrication on top of the regular 10.000km check from the standard table, particularly recommended for use in winter, on wet roads or roads with sand/road salt (loss of lubrication), or in combination with adjusting the bearing preload of the side housings (Technical Communication 019-2010). Grease: AGIP GREASE PV2. Tool tightening torque 14-20 Nm; side housing parallelogram mounting screw tightening torque 45-50 Nm (confirmed separately in the Service Station Manual table 'FRONT SUSPENSION 45 to 50 Nm' — cross-validation with the bulletin value).

The grease nipples of the front suspension

Piaggio has released a separate Technical Bulletin for the MP3 (all versions, plus the Fuoco 500) regarding the lubrication of the bearings in the side bushings of the tilting mechanism. Important detail: there hangs no fixed kilometer or monthly interval on — Piaggio explicitly calls it additional maintenance, depending on operating conditions. If you ride in winter, with a lot of road salt, or often in the rain, lubrication is advisable more frequently. You need a grease gun with a grease nipple connection for this.

Major service — every 10.000 km

With the MP3, virtually everything depends on the 10.000 km service: engine oil with oil filter, spark plugs, V-belt, and the CVT rollers are removed all at once. PLEASE NOTE: the 500 ie has TWO spark plugs (dual ignition).

  • 1,7 l — so two 1-liter bottles
  • A leaking drain bolt will cost you a block; this washer costs a few euros.
  • The 500 ie has a dual spark plug ignition system — you need TWO of them.
  • select by displacement: 250/300 vs 400/500
Wearing parts2brake pads, brake fluid — replace as needed
