Piaggio MP3 Maintenance Schedule

The Piaggio MP3 is a three-wheeler, and this is reflected in the maintenance: in addition to normal scooter work, it has a tilting front suspension with its own lubrication points. The engine rhythm, however, is very straightforward — Piaggio hangs virtually everything on the 10.000 km service: engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs, V-belt, and the CVT rollers come out all at once.

Pay attention to the spark plugs: the 500 ie (493 cc) has a double spark plug ignition system — so you have it two needed, not one. Below is the complete schedule with the factory specifications.

The maintenance schedule by mileage

Expand a turn for the tasks and factory specifications. Repeat fixed rhythm turns at the same interval each time.

Wear parts outside the fixed schedule

• Replace brake pads — at wear limit (insufficient brake lining/wear indicator)
• Front suspension (parallelogram) — extra lubrication of side housing bearings via grease nipple tool P/N 020943Y (4 lubrication points: top + bottom on both side housings) — NO fixed Piaggio kilometer/month interval — Technical Bulletin 012-2012 (24-04-2012, valid for MP3 all versions + Fuoco 500) explicitly mentions this as additional lubrication on top of the regular 10.000km check from the standard table, particularly recommended for use in winter, on wet roads or roads with sand/road salt (loss of lubrication), or in combination with adjusting the bearing preload of the side housings (Technical Communication 019-2010). Grease: AGIP GREASE PV2. Tool tightening torque 14-20 Nm; side housing parallelogram mounting screw tightening torque 45-50 Nm (confirmed separately in the Service Station Manual table 'FRONT SUSPENSION 45 to 50 Nm' — cross-validation with the bulletin value).

The grease nipples of the front suspension

Piaggio has released a separate Technical Bulletin for the MP3 (all versions, plus the Fuoco 500) regarding the lubrication of the bearings in the side bushings of the tilting mechanism. Important detail: there hangs no fixed kilometer or monthly interval on — Piaggio explicitly calls it additional maintenance, depending on operating conditions. If you ride in winter, with a lot of road salt, or often in the rain, lubrication is advisable more frequently. You need a grease gun with a grease nipple connection for this.

What Do You Need?

• Motor Oil: Putoline 5W-40 Synthetic Scooter (1 l) — factory spec 5W-40, API SL / ACEA A3 / JASO MA — 1,7 L for the 493cc engine
• Mahle Oil Filter (Vespa GTS / Piaggio MP3) — is replaced together with the oil, every 10.000 km
• Spark plug: NGK CR7EKB — Piaggio original — the 500 IU needs TWO (double ignition)
• Spark plug: NGK MR7BI-8 (300/500 hpe, Euro 4/5) — for the newer hpe engine
• Hub oil: Eni Rotra Bike I-Ride 80W-90 (1 l) — Eni/AGIP is the specification prescribed by Piaggio — 250 cc
• Coolant: Putoline Coolant NF (1 l) — approx. 1,8 L system capacity (493cc engine)
• Brake fluid: Putoline DOT 4 (500 ml) — refresh every 24 months
• Locking key clutch (Vespa GTS / Piaggio MP3 300) — needed to loosen the clutch nut for V-belt change

• Replace spark plugs (2x, dual ignition) (NGK CR7EKB, electrode gap 0,7-0,8 mm)
• replace V-belt
• Replace CVT rollers / glide shoes
• Clean / check air filter (alternating per service)
• Adjusting the throttle/throttle cable
• Check steering system
• Check, clean, adjust, or lubricate the front suspension (parallelogram) if necessary

• Refresh seam oil (SAE 80W-90, exceeds API GL3 250 cc)
• Check valve clearance and adjust if necessary (intake 0,15 mm / exhaust 0,15 mm (cold) — confirmed for the 493cc engine)

• Check electrical system and battery
